One Response to “Martha and Mary Revisited”

  1. How wonderful to hear! When I saw the title of your sermon for this week, I marveled because our new pastor, Pastor Dorcas Rodrigues, preached on the same scriptures. Her title was “Choosing the Better Part.” In both cases, I was reminded that I needed to be more intentional in my worship, whether spending time with the Bible or doing the work I have been called to do. I told her afterwards that she had “stepped on my toes,” meaning that I saw my shortcomings so much, and I was not angry, but grateful. I felt the same with your sermon, because I have a blog and sometimes I feel to write about the injustices and oppression in America. But, I keep silent, afraid at the door being kicked in and my husband and me disappearing into a vacuum of nastiness. But, you reminded me that others have given their lives doing the right thing.

I taught Amos 5 in Sunday school yesterday, and verse 13 stood out: “The prudent man keeps quiet in such times, for these are evil times.” Your sermon reminded me that sometimes we must not be silent in evil times. When we sit at Jesus’s feet, we learn that our greatest gift to the world is love, and love demands a lot, especially in evil times. Lovely sermon. Short but so profound, Thank you.
